Virginia Simpson-Magruder Although I came from a family of creative, talented women, I
never had any art instruction. In my late 20's I recorded my dreams and
wanted a way to illustrate them without drawing, so I started doing
collages, then box constructions ala Joseph Cornell. After about 3 years
and various gallery showings I became "bored" -- I stopped cold turkey and
went off in another direction. But I for some reason I never got rid of my
collage materials. Last year, I started to throw things away, but stopped
myself at the last minute. Then mysteriously, very synchronistically, I
learned of the alteredbooks group on Yahoo. I am happy to report that I
refound my artistic self and I'm happily pursuing this art form (and
gleefully using up my stored stache of images!)
